As someone who's never been in a relationship, February 14th can sometimes just straight up suck haha. Granted I get through it, for I'm awesome and my music taste is chef's kiss. I've mentioned before that I'm a sucker for a great love song. I'm also a sucker for songs about longing for love, or hating on love. So hopefully these ten tunes will help you through the day as they do for me. So grab some candy, grab some tissues, and press play.
Song: Can't Seem To Make You Mine
Artist: The Seeds
Year of Release: 1965
"I tried everything I know to make you wanna love me so. The only thing you do is try to put the hurt on me."
We've all been there I'm sure, unrequited love. You want them. They don't want you back. Awesome. You can hear the pain in the Sky Saxon's voice since he goes "ooohhh" after almost every sentence. Gotta love an artist who isn't afraid to show their pain, for they are just like us, hopeless and unlucky in love.
Song: The Name of the Game
Artist: ABBA
Year of Release: 1977
"I was an impossible case. No one ever could reach me. But I think I can see in your face, there's a lot you can teach me."
Have you ever looked at someone and asked "so, what are we"? Basically this is the 70s version of that. You're catching feelings but you just don't know if they feel the same way. It's as if the two of you are playing the "will they won't they" trope and you're exhausted! Next time you see this person, just ask "WHAT'S THE NAME OF THE GAME?!".
Song: Love on the Rocks
Artist: Neil Diamond
Year of Release: 1980
"First, they say they want you. Hear how they really need you. Suddenly you find you're out there, walking in a storm."
Sometimes it's just not working, but you don't want to believe it. You do all you can to make it work, then next thing you know, it's over. You're just standing there, wondering what went wrong. You keep replaying everything in your head, over and over until you go mad. "Love on the Rocks" feels like a punch in the gut, and it makes you rethink why you even bothered in the first place....but then you ask yourself, 'is a rocky relationship worse than no relationship at all?'...uummm.....YEAH IT IS, DUH!
Song: Love Stinks
Artist: J. Geils Band
Year of Release: 1980
"You love her. She loves him. And he loves somebody else. You just can't win."
Remember in The Wedding Singer when Adam Sandler screams this song after being left at the alter? Yeah, this song was the PERFECT choice for that cinematic moment. Sometimes love just stinks, no way around it. You find love, than lose it, so you're in a funk for a while. You'll bounce back like the badass you are, but until then, put this song on full volume while you stuff yourself with some ice-cream. Then put on The Wedding Singer afterwards, for that always cheers me up!
Song: What's Love Got to Do with It
Artist: Tina Turner
Year of Release: 1984
"It may seem to you that I'm acting confused when you're close to me. If I tend to look dazed, I've read it someplace, I've got cause to be."
Tina Turner, come back to us PLEASE. I don't think I need to explain why I love this song, but I'm going to anyway. Not only does Ms. Turner sing the hell out of this song, but the lyrics also tell a story of a physical relationship. It's strictly sexual, nothing more, in fact, "you must try to ignore that it means more than that". Sometimes, you don't want to go through the frustrations of relationships, so casual fling it is! Just try not to catch any feelings, or diseases...
Song: After The Rain
Artist: Nelson
Year of Release: 1990
"The only thing he ever gave you was a broken heart. Don't be afraid to lose what was never meant to be."
What happens after a heart breaks? It heals, you get yourself up, and try again. Nelson come from an iconic musical family, for their father is the one and only Ricky Nelson. So it's no surprise that these guys know how to write a song. It's an upbeat glam metal track that will instantly cheer you up! It's motivational lyrics and rockin' sound are the perfect combination for anyone feeling lonely, especially on Valentine's Day. If I ever get my heart broken and I feel like no one got me, I know Nelson got me.
Song: 6am
Artist: Fitz and The Tantrums
Year of Release: 2013
"Still I dream of the days when we were on the same page. I really want them now. All my hopes, they stay curled in between these four walls and I can't shake them out."
You ever hear a love song and start to realize that you no longer relate to it? That must suck for you, sorry about that. Well now here's a song you can relate to because you're now single! Welcome to my world, here's some chocolate! But seriously, this is a song that is so fun to dance to, you won't even realize that it's about heartache at first. Fitz and The Tantrums catalog is filled with songs that combine the tight musicianship along with an indie pop sound. What makes their songs great is that they aren't afraid to show vulnerability in the lyrics. Like anyone after a breakup, on the outside you seem fine and dancing around, but inside you're hurting and want the good feelings back.
Song: Love is a Bitch
Artist: Two Feet
Year of Release: 2017
"'Cause when I'm around you, I tend to keep changin' my mind. I promise, I promise myself not to slip back into old habit. 'Cause heartbreak is savage and love is a bitch."
Sometimes you get so lost in love, you don't realize the situation you're in. They're all you think about, talk about, you might be addicted to the person. Everyone around you is concerned, you might want to rethink this. You know I'm right, and yet, you're still consumed, even AFTER it ended. Girl, play the track, order some pizza, and put on a face mask! Love may be a bitch but your life doesn't have to be, OKAAAAAY?!
Song: Prophet
Artist: King Princess
Year of Release: 2019
"'Cause I can only think about you. And what it's like to walk around you. And why they like to talk about you. ’Cause I can only think about you."
While this track is more about obsession, this is MY blog so I pick the songs. Sometimes you're so infatuated by the person you think it's love. Now THAT I unfortunately can relate to. You know they're out of your league, but you will do ANYTHING to get on there level. Take my advice, DON'T DO IT!!! It's not worth it and it doesn't work! Let King Princess and her song be a lesson to you. You're not in love, you're just sad and horny, now go watch some porn you "love" obsessed sicko!
Song: Killshot
Artist: Magdalena Bay
Year of Release: 2019
"If I wanna stay alive, you should never cross my mind. Yeah, I knew it, I've been through it."
How is this song so seductive and yet scary at the same time? Well mark me down as scared AND horny! This track is for anyone who has had the hots for someone they KNOW isn't good for them. Believe me, I've been there, and it's dangerous, yet so thrilling! Magdalena Bay aren't afraid to use haunting sounds while also entrancing their listeners. Their song "Killshot" sounds like a forbidden confession that you wait until everyone is asleep to listen to. Just like a toxic crush, it can be exciting, but at a cost. So before you fall for another monster, just play this song while rewatching Netflix's "YOU" for the upteenth time...what?
I hope these songs do for you what they've done for me, question my sanity while snacking on half priced candy! Until next time, enjoy my madness!
